How do you make sure you never forget your insulin at home?

I wish I could say I never forget my insulin, but let me tell you about the time I went to brunch, blood sugar climbing, and realized my pen was having a quiet day on the kitchen counter.

Nowadays, because I’m using an Omnipod 5 insulin pump, my insulin is always mostly attached to me. So I don’t have the same worries.

Since then, I’ve created a “leave-no-insulin-behind” ritual. It’s a lot like the “phone, wallet, keys” ritual, but it’s to keep me alive. I keep a little diabetes go-bag that’s always stocked with a spare pen and pen needles, a spare pod, vial, syringes, test strips, sanitizing spray, and low snacks. It lives in my purse, and I check it before I leave the house because it’s literally my lifeline.

I’m a little fashionista, so I love changing bags with each outfit, and I make sure that one go-bag is always with me no matter what—even if it means my boyfriend has it tucked away in his suit jacket on fancy nights.

Life happens. But a bit of prep makes it so much easier to handle the chaos. And a little advice? Prep before you’re on the go. When you’re ready to leave, you may be rushing, and I find that’s when I become the most forgetful!
