New Delhi: Over a billion of the human population is living with diabetes. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in the world. This condition is caused due to unhealthy (low or elevated) levels of blood glucose in the body. It is mainly of two types, type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This condition can affect various organs of the body such as the heart, pancreas, and liver. The kidneys can also have an adverse effect due to diabetes. Here is what you need to know about.

Type 2 diabetes and kidney

The purpose of the kidneys is to filter toxins from the blood. When a person is suffering from type 2 diabetes, it forces the kidney to filter out the glucose. This causes them to overwork, resulting in ineffective kidney function. The development of kidney diseases due to diabetes is known as diabetic nephropathy. Prolonged periods of elevated levels of blood glucose in the body can also cause kidney stones.

How to manage diabetic nephropathy

Here are some ways in which you can manage diabetic nephropathy and keep your kidneys healthy:

  1. Don't smoke: Smoking causes the body to gradually weaken from within. Avoid smoking as it can adversely affect your diabetes and put you at risk of developing conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, erectile dysfunction, and unhealthy bones.
  2. Eat well: Include foods that are rich in healthy fats, fibre, protein, and other essential nutrients to keep the body lively. Avoid processed foods and refined sugar.
  3. Exercise: Physical inactivity can cause weight gain and several other health conditions. This can contribute to the development of diabetic nephropathy. Exercise regularly to maintain a healthy weight as well as a healthy body.
  4. Drink water: Dehydration can cause the body to lose its ability to function efficiently. Make sure that you drink sufficient water throughout the day and keep your body refreshed and relaxed.
  5. Consult a doctor: Medications can contribute extensively to the management of blood sugar levels and aiding with diabetic nephropathy. If you notice any symptoms, make sure to consult a medical professional and take the prescribed medication.
